Our Story

Agent Help started with a frustration a lot of South Africans know well: calling a business, any business, and simply not getting through. Here's who's behind it.

Jon-Paul Akal, Chief Executive Officer at Agent Help

Jon-Paul Akal

Chief Executive Officer

Jon-Paul grew up in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal and was schooled at Michaelhouse, where a quiet appreciation for doing things properly first took root. From there, his career took him into telecoms, where he spent the next decade learning how South Africans actually communicate, what breaks down between businesses and their customers, and where the real friction lives in a phone call.

About six years ago, that path crossed with artificial intelligence, and something clicked. Jon-Paul spent years immersed in the technology, watching it move from novelty to genuinely useful faster than almost anyone expected. But it was a far more personal set of moments that turned that expertise into a mission. Trying to book an appointment with his doctor after hours. Trying to get hold of his surgeon after a knee operation. Calling his car dealership about an issue with his vehicle, only to be told to call back in the morning. In almost every single client-facing business he dealt with, Jon-Paul could personally feel that gap. He knew he wasn't the only one. Patients, clients and customers all over the country were being underserved in exactly this way, not because businesses didn't care, but because there was no good way to be reachable around the clock.

With a decade in telecoms and years of hands-on AI experience behind him, Jon-Paul teamed up with his brother, Trevor, to build what would become Agent Help: an AI receptionist that never misses a call. Christopher later joined the two of them, bringing his own expertise in cybersecurity and partner networks to the team. What began as a way to solve one very specific problem has grown into something bigger. Agent Help is now expanding into a full omnichannel communications platform, and the businesses using it are already seeing the results.

Trevor Akal, Chief Operating Officer at Agent Help

Trevor Akal

Chief Operating Officer

Trevor was schooled at Michaelhouse alongside his brother Jon-Paul, where the same grounding in doing things properly took hold. His path from there ran through hospitality, spending over five years in the industry before moving into hotel management, where he learned first hand what it takes to keep a guest facing operation running without a single dropped ball.

From hotel management, Trevor moved into remote customer support, and that's where the next decade of his career took shape. Over ten years in customer support and customer success followed, but it wasn't just about answering tickets. Trevor found himself drawn to the systems behind the support, building out training programmes and support infrastructure for remote teams, and figuring out how to make good service repeatable rather than a matter of luck or who happened to be on shift.

That combination, hospitality instincts paired with a systems builder's mind, is what Trevor brought to Agent Help. While Jon-Paul saw the gap from the business and telecoms side, Trevor saw it from the floor, the exact moment a guest or a customer needed something and there was no one available to help them properly. He now leads all technical implementation at Agent Help: infrastructure, prompt engineering, systems architecture and backend development. Every AI receptionist Agent Help builds carries that same hospitality standard Trevor learned to enforce long before AI was part of the conversation, because a good receptionist isn't just about answering the phone, it's about making the person on the other end feel looked after.

Christopher Froli, Customer Experience Officer at Agent Help

Christopher Froli

Customer Experience Officer

Christopher built his career in managed IT services and cybersecurity, running Fluid Communications, his own company, before joining Agent Help. He built that career on a single obsession: customer relationships. In managed IT, he was accountable for systems businesses cannot trade without, and for solving the problems his clients actually brought him, not just the ones on a ticket.

He brings that standard to Agent Help, focused on the part of the business owners chronically underserve: their front line. He owns the client relationship end to end, making sure the first voice a customer hears is as sharp as the business behind it. Cape Town born and bred.
